Apparently there was a horse race today - the race that stops the nation. I care not at all about horse races. But I like rituals. I like dressing up. I like excuses to eat, drink and be merry with friends. It used to be one of those days that all Australians could participate in. These days that's not so much the case any more because of concerns about cruelty to animals. Not unreasonably, there is a growing movement about the idea of using animals for our entertainment and profit. While I doubt my $5 bet will make a difference either way - except that every $5 is part of the problem I guess. Perhaps next year I'll have the party and not a bet.
